Was ist der Standpunkt des Kunstwerks in Bezug auf uns, wo steht es und wo stehen wir? Diese entscheidende Frage in Bezug auf den „Raum der Kunst“ und seine Verbindung zum „realen Raum“ (dem Raum, in dem sich der Betrachter befindet) ist ein wichtiger Ausgangspunkt für den Versuch, meine Interventionen zu lesen.

Die amerikanische Minimal Art unternahm den entschlossensten Versuch, den realen Raum der Kunstwahrnehmung in den eigentlichen Raum der Kunsterfahrung umzustrukturieren. Wie die Minimalisten möchte ich den Körper des Betrachters als elementares Instrument der Erfahrung einsetzen und dabei auch unsere Erinnerungen an und Vertrautheit mit dieser früheren Kunst berücksichtigen. 

Kann Raum mehr leisten als ein Bild, mehr als eine Skulptur? Das sind Fragen, die ich in meinen Installationen zu beantworten versuche.

Die meisten meiner Werke sind ortsspezifische Installationen, die immer vor Ort entstehen und einen Raum für eine bestimmte Zeit verändern. Ihr anschließendes Verschwinden (oder die Wiederverwertung der Materialien) verhindert, dass sie als Warenobjekte in Umlauf gebracht werden. 

Mit geometrischen Strukturen, einfachen Konstruktionsprinzipien und bewusst ausgewählten Industrie- und Baumaterialien sowie dem Verzicht auf jegliche Zeichen künstlerischer Individualität versuche ich, eine neue Form der Artikulation selbst des Monumentalen und des Vergänglichen zu schaffen, die die Register des Pathos, der Erzählung oder der Botschaft vermeidet.

What is the artwork's stand­point with respect to us, where does it stand, and where do we stand? This, the decisive question regarding the "space of art" and its connection to the "real space" (the space in which the beholder is situated) is an important point of departure for an attempt to read my interven­tions.

American Minimal Art undertook the most deter­mined effort to restructure the real space of the per­ception of art into the space proper of the art experience. Like the Minimalists, I want to employ the beholder's body as an elementary in­strument of experience, taking into our account, moreover, our recollections of, and familiarity with, this earlier art. 

Can space accomplish more than an image, more than a sculpture? These are questions that I try to work out in my installations.

Most of my works are site-specific installations which are always created in situ, changing a space for a certain period of time; their subsequent disappearance (or the recycling of the materials) prevents their circulation as commodity-objects. 

With geometric structures, simple construc­tive principles, and delib­erately selected industrial and building materials, and by forgoing all tokens of artistic individuality, I try to create a novel articulation even of the monumental and the ephemeral that avoids the registers of pathos, narrative, or message.
